Staying active and strong is important at any age, but it becomes even more important as we get older. Over time, we naturally lose muscle strength, and our balance, flexibility, coordination and bone health can all decline.
The thought of starting exercise can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you’ve become less active and are wondering whether it’s possible to regain your fitness. The good news is that it absolutely is. It’s never too late to start moving more and enjoy the benefits.
One of Bristol’s best outdoor activities for older adults is Nordic walking. Based on ordinary walking, it uses two specially designed poles and a simple technique that is easy to learn. The poles help turn a regular walk into a gentle whole-body workout suitable for almost everyone, whatever your age or fitness level.
For such a simple activity, Nordic walking offers a surprising range of benefits. The poles provide extra support and stability, helping to improve balance and confidence. They encourage good posture and can reduce strain on the knees, hips and other joints. As a full-body exercise, Nordic walking can help improve fitness, strengthen muscles, support bone health and boost heart health.
Perhaps best of all, it’s enjoyable and sociable. Walking with others in Bristol’s beautiful parks provides fresh air, time in nature, friendly conversation and a great sense of community.
If you’re interested in giving Nordic walking a try, there are several low-cost groups that meet in Bristol parks:
St George Park: Tuesdays 10-11am (tea/coffee in the Beehive Centre after)
Southmead/Blaise Castle Estate: Tuesdays 1-2pm
Eastville Park: Wednesdays 10-11am
Greenway Centre, Southmead: Wednesdays 6-7pm
Oldbury Court Estate: Fridays 10-11am
